Utility Engineering Technician

Technician level work responsible for coordination and implementation of public utility activities involving communications, electric, gas, and water. Inspects operating units for performance and quality control. Reviews industry guidelines for size, type, and class of utility service needed. Evaluates methods and collects data for consumer complaints and investigates problematic services. Maintains relationships with operators and personnel to ensure compliance of policy and guidelines. Verifies costs estimates and overall validity of utility services proposed.

Typically requires Graduation from a standard four-year high school or equivalent (GED or High School Equivalency Diploma); and 0-2 years of related experience.

Utility Engineer

Professional engineering work involving activities associated with the regulation, design, operation, and maintenance of public utility construction and services. Reviews contracts for maintenance, construction, and expansion of utility services. Compiles reports, collects data, and analyzes plans submitted by utility companies; corresponds with financial and legal personnel to comply with policy and guidelines. May oversee employees in technical situations to ensure regulatory procedures are being followed. Testifies before the Public Service Commission regarding regulatory proceedings.

Typically requires Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, possession of a valid certificate of registration as Professional Engineer from the Mississippi Board of Licensure for Professional Engineers and Surveyors; 1-3 years of experience and knowledge in the specialized area of work.
