Transportation Engineer-in-Training

Entry level engineering work which involves routine application of professional engineering principles in connection with the development, construction, design, and maintenance of roads, bridges, and highways. The work affords some opportunity for the use of independent judgment in planning work details and making minor technical decisions.

Typically requires a Bachelor’s Degree in engineering and registration as an Engineer-in-Training with the Board of Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors or a Bachelor’s Degree in engineering without registration.

Transportation Engineer I

First-level engineering position accountable for verification of accuracy and completion of submissions based on prescribed templates. Verifies field work, inspections and measurements. Conducts code compliance review of minimal complexity. Maintains and updates databases within existing formats. Performs calculations, estimates, design, and data analysis based on prescribed formulas. Engineering work performed at this level is well defined, and has precedents; such as tables and templates.

Typically requires a Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant Engineering discipline, licensure as a professional engineer, and 0-2 years of experience.

Transportation Engineer II

Performs standard engineering assignments of limited to moderate complexity in relevant discipline in accordance with specifications/ designs. May work within defined standards and procedures. This level is for a professional individual contributor who has a working knowledge of engineering principles and practices. Performs independent inspections of moderate complexity and makes recommendations. Writes moderately complex permits and engineering documents within existing standards and precedents. Develops limited to moderately complex designs and may participate in more complex designs. Evaluates data, performs in-depth data analysis and prepares technical reports for review. Coordinates work with other engineers. May supervise engineering technicians.

Typically requires a Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant Engineering discipline, licensure as a professional engineer, and 2-4 years of experience.

Transportation Engineer III

A seasoned level engineering position accountable for complex design and design review in a designated engineering discipline. Performs project planning and budgeting and project management of complex engineering projects. Participates in the setting of parameters for engineering specifications. Participates in the preparation of new rules and regulations and in revision to existing rules and regulations. Reviews proposed changes to statutes and their impact. Mentors lower level professional individual contributors. Has decision making authority within approved parameters on complex /large impact projects and complex/high impact rules and regulations compliance. Serves as source of testimony and expert advice to entities such as the Legislature, Committees, Courts, Commissions and external engineering firms. May supervise engineering technicians.

Typically requires a Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant Engineering discipline, licensure as a professional engineer, and 4-6 years of experience.
