Family Description


Jobs in this family are sworn law enforcement officers at the following agencies: Mental Health; Marine Resources; Department of Public Safety (Capitol Police); Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks; Reservoir Patrol; Agriculture and Commerce, Corrections, Transportation, Gaming, Attorney General, and Revenue. This family differs from non-sworn security in that the Law Enforcement Professional Certification is required for all levels.

Law Enforcement Officer I

Entry level sworn law enforcement position is entry level technical work in which officers are responsible for patrolling and enforcing relevant laws within their jurisdiction. Work is performed under direct supervision of law enforcement staff/personnel of higher classifications.

Typically requires possession of a State of Mississippi Law Enforcement Professional Certification within six months of hire. By law, certain Cadets are classified as non-state service until certification is obtained.

Law Enforcement Officer II

Journey level law enforcement position is more technical in nature than the first level but still involves patrolling and enforcing relevant laws within their jurisdiction. Work is performed under direct supervision of law enforcement staff/personnel of higher classifications.

Typically requires possession of a State of Mississippi Law Enforcement Professional Certification and 1-2 year of experience in law enforcement.

Law Enforcement Officer III

Advanced level law enforcement position who is responsible for patrolling and enforcing relevant laws within their jurisdiction. Work is performed under direct supervision of law enforcement staff/personnel of higher classifications.  In addition, work involves assisting in the interview process of suspects and witnesses and assisting other law enforcement agencies and/or municipalities when necessary. May lead a team of officers in the absence of a lead officer. Work is performed under general supervision performing clearly defined tasks using established methods and techniques.

Typically requires possession of a State of Mississippi Law Enforcement Professional Certification, and 2-4 years of experience in law enforcement.

Law Enforcement Officer I (Degree)

Entry level specialized law enforcement position serving as a lead officer who is responsible for patrolling and enforcing relevant laws within their jurisdiction. In addition, work involves assisting in the interview process of suspects and witnesses and assisting other law enforcement agencies and/or municipalities when necessary. Additionally, may be responsible for testifying in court cases regarding violations. This level is assigned full scope of lead work to include assisting in the orientation of new employees; giving direction to workers concerning work procedures; communicating, monitoring, and reviewing work in conformance to established standards of performance; and providing an informal assessment of workers' to the supervisor.

Typically requires 60 semester hours of college, possession of a State of Mississippi Law Enforcement Professional Certification within six months of hire, and 0-2 years of experience in law enforcement.

Law Enforcement Officer II (Degree)

Law Enforcement Officer III (Degree)

Typically requires 60 semester hours of college, possession of a State of Mississippi Law Enforcement Professional Certification and 4-6 years of experience in law enforcement.

Law Enforcement Officer Team Lead

First level supervisor supervises employees/staff which enforces relevant laws to the agency’s jurisdiction. Work involves ensuring uniforms and weapons are inspected properly; ensuring activities and investigations are conducted according to policies and procedures; providing direction in interviewing suspects and witnesses; and testifying in court cases. In addition, this job class may be responsible for providing hiring recommendations, training, coaching, and allocating work to staff; assigning and reassigning tasks to accomplish prescribed work effectively and efficiently; administering first-aid and emergency medical treatments appropriately; and verifying written reports/documents of incidents. Supervision at this level requires employees to have thorough knowledge and skills to perform and review the work overseen. Work is performed under the general direction of an administrative superior.

Typically requires possession of a State of Mississippi Law Enforcement Professional Certification, and 5-7 years of experience in law enforcement.

Law Enforcement Officer Supervisor

Law Enforcement Officer Manager

Third level supervisory position manages and supervises groups of sworn and civilian personnel. At this level, employees manage the hiring, training, planning, and assigning work; assigning performance assessments, coaching, and discipline evaluations; ensuring officers are prepared to testify in court cases; providing direction to law enforcement staff in interviewing suspects and witnesses; administering first-aid and emergency medical treatments appropriately; and overseeing the accuracy of report/documents. Supervision at this level requires employees to have the knowledge and skills to perform and review the work overseen. Work is performed under the general direction of chief of police.

Typically requires possession of a State of Mississippi Law Enforcement Professional Certification, and 7-9 years of experience in law enforcement.

Law Enforcement Officer Administrator

This classification serves as the Chief of Police for their respective agency. At this level, an employee performs administrative professional law enforcement work responsible for directing the operations of an agency’s police force. Work includes directing law enforcement staff; ensuring proper training of officers; coordinating weekly scheduling in order to ensure adequate coverage; evaluating the effectiveness and efficiency of policies and procedures; overseeing the maintenance of reports/documents; conferring with the bureau director, public officials, and members of the general public in order to hear and resolve complaints; approving division personnel actions to include appointments, terminations, and demotions; developing policies and procedures governing the efficiency of the Division; reviewing approval requests of expenditures relating to division funds; and preparing fiscal year budget recommendations.

Typically requires possession of a State of Mississippi Law Enforcement Professional Certification, and 10-12 years of experience in law enforcement.
