Family Description


Jobs in this family plan, organize, oversee, and participate in rehabilitative programs that facilitate rehabilitation of or restore functional communication capabilities and skills of patients/residents with mental disabilities, disorders, or injuries.

Typical functions:

The functions within this job family will vary by level, but may include the following:

  • Aid in establishing pre-speech skills in treatment sessions with patients/residents.
  • Chart daily behavior and case histories; prepare progress notes on assigned cases.
  • Administer diagnostic tests to determine the nature and extent of speech disorders.


The work assigned to positions in this series ranges from implementing therapy plans to developing speech-language therapy plans and programs.

Speech-Language Pathology Assistant

Speech-Language Pathology Assistant accountable for helping in the treatment of communication disorders. Accountable for implementing treatment plans as defined by a licensed therapist, including administering therapy, preparing case histories, documenting progress notes, consulting with licensed therapist about client progress, and assisting families and teachers of individuals with speech and hearing problems. Works under the direction and supervision of a licensed Speech-Language Pathologist with periodic review of work methods, reports, and processes.

Typically requires state licensure as a Speech-Language Pathology Assistant.

Speech-Language Pathologist

Speech-Language Pathologist accountable for planning, developing, evaluating, coordinating, implementing and monitoring speech, language, and hearing services for children and adults. Accountable for administering and arranging for remedial and therapeutic services through individual or group instructions. Observes patients and monitors and tests for progress. Provides consultation to educational and treatment staff and participates as a member of an interdisciplinary team in developing and implementing individual treatment plans. Work may include supervision of subordinate staff engaged in speech and hearing activities.

Typically requires state licensure as a Speech-Language Pathologist.
