Family Description


Jobs in this family perform a wide variety of research activities including the application of mathematical and statistical theories, and/or perform technical work involving descriptive or inferential statistical data analysis. Positions in these classifications present historical, economic, and statistical data for use of business organizations, individuals, schools, state agencies, and others interested in the trends and development of the state.

Research/Data Technician

Technical-level Research and Data position accountable for performing routine duties involving compiling statistical data in an agency, institution, or department. Employees are accountable for preparing business research reports, information leaflets, certificates, and letters providing statistical data to be used for general business purposes. Assists higher-level professional positions, working under general supervision and performing tasks using established methods and techniques.

Typically requires High School Diploma or equivalent and 0-1 years of experience.

Research/Data Analyst I

First-level Research and Data professional position accountable for assisting a higher-level professional in the collection, compilation, analysis, and presentation of quantitative and qualitative data. Employees are responsible for assisting in the development of forms, questionnaires, and other sampling techniques for data collection; assisting in preparing reports, graphs, data for publication, and tabular materials of a varying nature; and maintaining and adapting database and statistical programs.

Typically requires a Bachelor’s degree and 0-2 years of experience.

Research/Data Analyst II

Second-level Research and Data professional position accountable for the collection, compilation, analysis, and presentation of quantitative and qualitative data. Employees are responsible for planning, coordinating, and participating in major statistical surveys, research studies, and reporting programs. Accountabilities may include developing forms, questionnaires, and other sampling techniques for data collection; interpreting results of studies and surveys; and making recommendations based on evaluation of these results. At this level, employees work independently or as a member of a team, project, or program.

Typically requires a Bachelor’s degree and 2-4 years of experience.

Research/Data Analyst III

Third-level Research and Data professional position accountable for developing and conducting complex statistical surveys, research studies, and reporting programs having statewide impact. Employees are responsible for collecting, compiling, and analyzing data using inferential statistical measures; analyzing and modifying existing programs and techniques to maximize performance; and organizing and presenting data solicited from agency personnel, state, and local officials, outside professionals, and/or the general public. Employees at this level typically have specialized technical skills and exercise a higher degree of decision making and independence. Accountable for training and monitoring the work of lower-level research staff.

Typically requires a Bachelor’s degree and 3-5 years of experience.

Research/Data Analyst Team Lead

First-level Research and Data Statistician supervisory position accountable for the management of entire research projects within an agency or on a statewide project, including supervising lower-level project staff. Employees are accountable for supervising an interdisciplinary team of statisticians and systems analysts to develop reports and recommendations; handling projects that are sensitive in nature or have significant financial and/or social impact; and allocating resources and establishing guidelines for dealing with statistical analysis work. At this level, employee supervision includes hire recommendations; training; work planning, assignments, and review; and performance assessment, coaching, and progressive discipline. Supervision at this level also requires employees to possess the knowledge and skills to perform and review the work overseen.

Typically requires a Bachelor’s degree and 5-7 years of experience.

Research/Data Analyst Supervisor

Second-level Research and Data Statistician supervisory position responsible for the administration of agency or statewide research projects, including accountability for the work of all professional levels of work in this family. Employees are accountable for ensuring projects meet programs' data and research needs, and the presentation of entire research project to state and local officials, other state agencies, and outside professionals. At this level, employee supervision includes hire recommendations; training; work planning, assignments, and review; and performance assessment, coaching, and progressive discipline. Supervision at this level also requires employees to possess the knowledge and skills to perform and review the work overseen.

Typically requires a Bachelor’s degree and 5-7 years of experience.
