Family Description


Jobs in this family plan, organize, oversee, and participate in rehabilitative programs that facilitate rehabilitation of or restore functional capabilities and skills, relieve pain, and maximize capabilities of patients/residents with physical disabilities, disorders, or injuries.

Typical functions:

The functions within this job family will vary by level, but may include the following:

  • Develop and implement a physical therapy treatment plan.
  • Utilize various treatment modalities and equipment as appropriate and/or prescribed.
  • Observe patient/resident tolerance of treatment procedures and make adjustments within specified goals and boundaries.


The work assigned to positions in this series ranges from implementing therapy plans to developing physical therapy plans and programs.

Jobs and Descriptions


Therapy Aide

Therapy Aide for Physical, Occupational, and Respiratory Therapists accountable for carrying out plans as prescribed by the therapist. Aides work with clients/patients to complete a maintenance plan. Typically requires High School Diploma or equivalency and 0-2 years of experience.

Therapy Assistant

Physical Therapy Assistant accountable for helping patients develop, recover, improve, and maintain the skills needed for daily living and working. Directly involved in providing therapy to patients through the use of adaptive devices and equipment, and contributing to therapy plans through recommendation and documentation. Performs billing, ordering and stocking supplies, and other clerical duties. Maintains adaptive equipment and patient documentation.

Typically requires state licensure as a Physical Therapy Assistant.

Physical Therapist

Physical Therapist accountable for treating injured, ill, or disabled patients through the therapeutic use of everyday activities to help these patients develop, recover, improve, and maintain the skills needed for daily living and working. Acts with independence in directing screening and assessment, treatment, intervention, administration, program planning, and documentation for acute and long-term care patients to enable them to improve their optimal functional abilities. Applies clinical reasoning in developing Physical Therapy plans and programs. Plans the workload for employees and provides training and development. Delivers work direction and clinical supervision to Physical Therapy Assistants and other support staff.

Typically requires state licensure as a Physical Therapist.

Therapy Team Lead

Supervisory Physical Therapist accountable for treating injured, ill, or disabled patients through the therapeutic use of everyday activities to help these patients develop, recover, improve, and maintain the skills needed for daily living and working. Acts with independence in directing screening and assessment, treatment, intervention, administration, program planning, and documentation for acute and long- term care patients to enable them to improve their optimal functional abilities. Applies clinical reasoning in developing Physical Therapy plans and programs. Employee supervision includes hire recommendations; training; work planning, assignments, and review; and performance assessment, coaching, and progressive discipline. Supervision at this level also requires these employees to have the knowledge and skills to perform and review the work overseen. May serve as Therapy Director over multiple disciplines of therapy.

Typically requires state licensure in their respective discipline and 4-6 years of experience.
