The functions within this job family will vary by level, but may include the following:

  • Interpret rules, regulations, and procedures relating to pharmaceutical standards of service.
  • Advise on the usage and effects of pharmaceutical treatments.


Positions allocated to this series may perform the duties described, or specialize in conducting field investigations of pharmaceutical practices and/or pricing procedures. The work assigned to positions in this series ranges from professional to administrative/consultative.

Jobs and Descriptions


Pharmacy Technician

First-level technical position accountable for assisting a Pharmacist in drug distribution and inventory. A familiarity of medical terminology and drug types, as well as the common abbreviations used in writing medication orders, and a knowledge of names, strengths, and dosage forms of medications is required. The incumbent must be able to follow procedures efficiently and accurately with minimum supervision.

Typically requires a High School Diploma or high school equivalency, 0-2 years of experience, and a passing score on the registration exam must be obtained within the first year of being a technician.

Pharmacist I

First-level Pharmacist accountable for advising patients, physicians, and other health practitioners on the selection, dosages, interactions, and side effects of medications as well as monitoring the health and progress of those patients. Accountable for interpretation of rules, regulations and procedures pertaining to the dispensing of drugs and related pharmaceutical standards of service; review and auditing of complex drug claims; conducting field investigations of pharmaceutical practices and procedures; utilization evaluation and investigation of pricing procedures. The work may involve regulating the practice of pharmacy and dispensing of drugs for the protection of the public. May direct the work of Pharmacy Technicians.

Typically requires state licensure as a Pharmacist.

Pharmacist II

Second-level Pharmacist accountable for advising patients, physicians, and other health practitioners on the selection, dosages, interactions, and side effects of medications as well as monitoring the health and progress of patients or may provide administrative pharmaceutical expertise for a statewide program. Incumbents serve as staff consultants; make recommendations concerning policy and changes in internal procedures and service coordination; and provide periodic reports as required. The work may involve regulating the practice of pharmacy and dispensing of drugs for the protection of the public. May direct the work of Pharmacy Technicians.

Typically requires state licensure as a Pharmacist and 1-2 years of experience as a Pharmacist.

Pharmacy Team Lead

First-level supervisory Pharmacist accountable for planning, organizing, and directing pharmaceutical activities in an institutional pharmacy or in serving as a supervisory Pharmacist in a department or agency. Jobs at this level have responsibility for the direction of a pharmaceutical program or a department within a large pharmaceutical operation. Employee supervision includes hire recommendations; training; work planning, assignments, and review; and performance assessment, coaching, and progressive discipline. Supervision at this level also requires these employees to have the knowledge and skills to perform and review the work overseen.

Typically requires state licensure as a Pharmacist, 4-5 years of experience as a Pharmacist.

Pharmacy Supervisor

Supervisory/managerial Pharmacist accountable for planning, organizing, and directing pharmaceutical activities including extensive and varied large-scale distribution of drugs in a large institutional pharmacy or in serving as the highest-level administrative Pharmacist in a department or agency. Jobs at this level have final responsibility for the direction of a very large and complex pharmaceutical program subject only to administrative direction; they exercise complete independence in establishing work procedures and methods within the framework of the policies of the institution where employed and in accordance with state and federal laws. The work requires constant contact with physicians, interns, nurse supervisors, and other officials for purposes of coordinating services with other units. Supervision is exercised over a staff of Pharmacists, Pharmacy Technicians, and other employees performing related work.  This work may also require serving as director of the compliance division of the Pharmacy Board. Work involves regulating the practice of pharmacy and dispensing of drugs for the protection of the public. Work involves formulating, directing, and controlling the operations of the compliance and administrative procedures of the Pharmacy Board.

Typically requires state licensure as a Pharmacist, 5+ years of experience as a Pharmacist and 2-4 years’ supervisory experience.
