Legal Assistant I

First-level vocational position accountable for preparation of the schedule of cases in adjudicatory or administrative hearings. Accountable for reviewing and distributing legal documents to attorneys and hearings officers, contacting witnesses and lawyers, and preparing issue orders for the court.

Typically requires a High School Diploma or high school equivalency and 0-2 years of related experience.

Legal Assistant II

Second-level vocational position accountable for legal work that involves conducting research for the preparation of legal documents, scheduling meetings, and preparing reports. Included are such tasks as making telephone contacts, composing and reviewing correspondence, obtaining and presenting information, setting up and maintaining files and records, typing briefs and other legal documents, and performing other related duties.

Typically requires a High School Diploma or high school equivalency and 2-4 years of related experience.

Legal Assistant III

Third-level vocational position accountable for assisting in the preparations of more complex legal documents, scheduling meetings, and preparing reports. Under the guidance and direction of an attorney, they perform research on legal issues, file legal documents, and draft legal instruments and correspondence.

Typically requires a High School Diploma or high school equivalency and 5+ years of experience in a legal environment and may also require a paralegal certification.

Legal Assistant Team Lead

Supervisory position accountable for performing legal research and drafting legal instruments and correspondence under the general direction of an attorney. Accountable for researching legal issues, investigating facts, and assisting attorneys in filing legal documents, and pursuing legal matters. Employee supervision at this level includes hire recommendations; training; work planning, assignments, and review; and performance assessment, coaching, and progressive discipline. Supervision at this level also requires these employees to have the knowledge and skills to perform and review the work overseen.

Typically requires a Bachelor’s Degree and 1-3 years of experience or High School Diploma or high school equivalency and 5-7 years of experience.  Appointing authority may also require a paralegal certification.
