Health Physicist I

Entry level radiological health work involving inspections and surveys of facilities using radioactive materials and/or x-ray devices to ensure compliance with state and federal regulations regarding accepted levels of radiation usage. Inspectors in this classification work with higher level health inspectors in performing their duties. May be responsible for responding to radiological disasters and conducting laboratory analyses on samples collected from facilities to determine the radiation content levels; and conducting training programs, seminars, and conferences on radiation usage and control.

Typically requires a Bachelor’s Degree and 0-2 years of experience.

Health Physicist II

Journey level radiological health work involving inspection and survey of facilities using radioactive materials to ensure compliance with state and federal regulations regarding accepted levels of radiation usage. Duties include inspecting x-ray devices, dental and medical equipment, and facilities using radioactive materials; conducting surveys and reviewing safety programs of facilities using radioactive materials; investigating accidents involving radioactive materials, conducting laboratory analyses on samples collected from facilities to determine the radiation content levels; and conducting training programs, seminars, and conferences on radiation usage and control.  May be responsible for responding to radiological disasters.

Typically requires a Bachelor’s Degree and 2-4 years of experience.

Health Physicist III

Seasoned level radiological health work involving inspection and survey of facilities using radioactive materials to ensure compliance with state and federal regulations regarding accepted levels of radiation usage. Duties include inspecting x-ray devices, dental and medical equipment, and facilities using radioactive materials; conducting surveys and reviewing safety programs of facilities using radioactive materials; investigating accidents involving radioactive materials, conducting laboratory analyses on samples collected from facilities to determine the radiation content levels; and conducting training programs, seminars, and conferences on radiation usage and control. May mentor lower level health inspectors. May be responsible for responding to radiological  disasters.

Typically requires a Bachelor’s degree and 3-6 years of relevant experience.

Health Physicist Team Lead

Administrative and managerial work in a highly scientific and/or technical area as it pertains to a comprehensive and statewide radiological health program. This classification sets operational priorities and makes personnel recommendations. Incumbents participate in the formulation of major policy and/or regulation decisions in radiological health. The work involves managing and supervising scientific and/or technical professionals of health physicists and chemists working in a specific area of radiological health. Supervision at this level also requires these employees to have the knowledge and skills to perform the work overseen. May be responsible for responding to radiological disasters.

Typically requires a Bachelor’s degree and 5-8 years of relevant experience.
