Environmental/Natural Resources Specialist I

First-level professional position that performs environmental/natural resources work that requires the application of basic scientific principles, practices, and techniques following established procedures and standards. At this level, employees conduct surveys, investigations, and assessments; perform simple statistical analyses for initial interpretation; may prepare and review routine summaries and technical documents to ensure regulatory compliance; identify potential problem areas and issues; and contribute to developing solutions.

Typically requires a Bachelor’s Degree and 0-1 year of experience.

Environmental/Natural Resources Specialist II

Second-level professional position that performs environmental/natural resources work that requires advanced knowledge of scientific principles, practices, and techniques in an area or multiple areas. Positions at this level are required to interpret the principles, theories and concepts of a scientific specialty and regulatory requirements. At this level, employees perform complex statistical analyses, may prepare and review technical documents to ensure regulatory compliance, identify potential problem areas or issues and contribute to developing solutions.

Typically requires a Bachelor’s Degree and 2-4 years of experience.

Environmental/Natural Resources Specialist III

Seasoned Professional Environmental/Natural Resources position that requires deep technical knowledge of an environmental/natural resources area or thorough knowledge of multiple areas and to interpret on a broad basis the principles, theories and concepts of a scientific specialty and regulatory requirements. Employees in these roles are usually regarded as a statewide expert in their area, known outside the boundaries of state government; influence standards at the agency, state, and national levels; prepare and review technical documents to ensure regulatory compliance; provide input and recommendations in legislation and rules; and provide expert testimony. At this level, employees serve as technical leadership, developing and implementing strategies and procedures for the collection, analysis, and interpretation of environmental and natural resources data and information, designing research and forecasting models, and reviewing technical work of others.

Typically requires a Bachelor’s Degree and 4-6 years of experience.

Environmental/Natural Resources Specialist Team Lead

Supervisory position accountable for operational oversight of scientific disciplines, comprised of professional teams and technical experts. Jobs in this family focus on the design, planning, implementation, and management of a statewide program, requiring significant multi-disciplinary coordination. At this level, employees in these positions are considered to be statewide experts in their field, performing complex assignments often requiring the development of unique solutions to environmental/natural resource problems because of the variables involved. Jobs prepare and review technical documents to ensure regulatory compliance, are involved in sharing information and influencing issues at the regional and national level, and may provide input on legislation.

Typically requires a Bachelor’s Degree and 4-6 years of experience.

Environmental/Natural Resources Specialist Supervisor

Environmental/Natural Resources Program Management level that provides oversight of a natural resources program or programs and oversees the work of professional employees. Work at this level is primarily focused on supervision and program implementation, requiring thorough knowledge of the rules and regulations and the ability to address program related operational issues. It also includes responsibility for the management of program financial resources and establishment of program objectives. Employee supervision includes hire recommendations; training; work planning, assignments, and review; and performance assessment, coaching, and progressive discipline. Supervision at this level also requires these employees to have the knowledge and skills to perform and review the work overseen. May assist with the drafting of legislation.

Typically requires a Bachelor’s Degree and 6+ years of experience.

Environmental/Natural Resources Specialist Manager

Environmental/Natural Resources Program Management level that provides oversight of a natural resources program or programs and oversees the work of professional employees. Work at this level is primarily focused on supervision and program implementation, requiring thorough knowledge of the rules and regulations, the ability to address program related operational issues, and laboratory analyses. It also includes responsibility for the management of program financial resources and establishment of program objectives. Employee supervision includes hire recommendations; training; work planning, assignments, and review; and performance assessment, coaching, and progressive discipline. Supervision at this level also requires these employees to have the knowledge and skills to perform and review the work overseen. May assist with the drafting of legislation.
